Palladium Wedding Rings - Information and Maintenance Guide

If you are considering choosing a Palladium wedding ring or you already have one then this blog will give you an insight into both its properties and how to care for your Palladium jewellery.

Palladium is part of the Platinum group of metals also known as ‘Noble Metals’ and it is also one of the rarest metals in the world.

Other metals in the Platinum group include Rhodium, Iridium and Ruthenium, however Platinum and Palladium are the only metals from the group rare enough to be traded on the world commodities market. This means that prices will fluctuate from day to day.

While it looks very similar to Platinum in colour, it is less dense and therefore lighter on the finger. Unlike Sterling Silver, Palladium will not tarnish in air as it is resistant to corrosion. Another attribute of Palladium is that it does not require rhodium plating the same way white gold does.

It is not only jewellery that Palladium is used. Many industries such as electronics, car manufacturing and dentistry all use Palladium. To go back to the beginning, Palladium was first discovered in the 1800’s. The word Palladium means a guardian or charm to preserve or protect so it has an added benefit as a wedding ring!

Regarding quality standards, compulsory hallmarking has been in effect since January 2010 which means that every Palladium ring will carry a stamp on the inside denoting is purity. At Lorimat we use Palladium 950 as standard. This means that the ring contains 95% Palladium and 5% Ruthenium. If you have sensitive skin, Palladium is a great choice due to the purity of the metal.

Care & Maintenance

Palladium Wedding Ring Care MaintenanceAll precious metals are susceptible to scratches, however scratches on Palladium are more of a displacement rather than a wearing and so none of the metal volume is lost. With polished Palladium rings, a natural patina will develop as the ring is worn giving a more matt or brushed finish. Which is quite appealing. If you do wish to restore your Palladium ring to it’s high polish, we can provide this service for you. For the first 5 years of purchase of wedding rings we provide an annual polish free of charge.

Here are few handy tips to take care of your Palladium jewellery in the meantime:

  • Remove your wedding ring when carrying out manual work
  • When you are not wearing your wedding ring, store is separately in a jewellery box or pouch so it is not against other metals
  • If you are working with harsh chemicals or bleach, remove all jewellery. While they will not damage the metal, they could discolour precious gemstones
  • To clean your Palladium jewellery we recommend using Town Talk Exquisite Jewel Sparkle which can be purchased in our store. Simply immerse the ring in the solution for 2 mins, remove and rinse and polish with a soft cloth.
